How To Share Local Player Dashboards To Digital Signage Screens

Cloud, Local Player, and On-Premise: what's the difference?

By default, when you connect a dashboard to Fugo, our cloud signs in and takes the screenshot: Fugo's servers visit your dashboard's URL, log in with the credentials you provide, capture the screen, and send that image down to your players. That's the right setup for the vast majority of dashboards, and it's what most of our other TV Dashboards guides walk through.

Some dashboards, though, aren't reachable from the public internet at all — a reporting tool that only resolves on your office network, for example. For those, Fugo offers two alternatives that keep everything local:

  • Local Player (this guide) — the digital signage player itself signs in and takes the screenshot, right where it's plugged in. No separate hardware needed beyond the player you're already using; your dashboard's credentials and data never leave your local network.

  • On-Premise Server — a dedicated machine on your network runs a small Fugo application that does the signing-in and screenshotting, and then serves that image to any of your players anywhere, not just ones on the same local network. See our separate On-Premise Dashboards guide for that setup — it's a different mechanism from Local Player, even though both live under the same settings tab in Fugo, described below.

If you're not sure which of the three fits your situation, our Choosing the Right TV Dashboard Configuration guide walks through the decision in more depth.

Before you start: best practices

Use a dedicated service account

Wherever possible, set up a least-privileged account — read-only access to just the dashboard you're displaying — rather than connecting with a real employee's own login. This avoids unexpected logouts and security notifications, and personal accounts often have a phone number tied to them that can get in the way of an automated sign-in. See our service account guide for details.

Have your exact dashboard URL ready

Copy the URL of the specific dashboard or report you want to display — not your platform's homepage — before you start. Starting from the right page avoids extra navigation steps that can slow down or complicate the automated login.

Setting up a Local Player dashboard

There are two ways to get a dashboard running in Local Player mode. Which one you use depends on how your dashboard's login works.

For most logins — a username/password form, an SSO button, TOTP-based 2FA — this is the simpler route and doesn't require installing anything beyond the player itself:

  1. In Fugo CMS, go to Dashboards and click Create Dashboard.

  2. Choose the card matching your platform if it has one, or Custom URL if it doesn't.

  3. Enter your dashboard's URL, choose an Authentication Method if relevant (Native, Okta, Google, or Microsoft), and enter your username, password, and Secret Key if your login requires 2FA. See our Secret Key guide if you're not sure where to find that.

  4. Click Create Dashboard.

  5. Open the new dashboard and go to its On-Premise tab.

  6. Turn on Use player for running steps. This tells Fugo to run the login and screenshot process on the player device you assign this dashboard to, instead of in the cloud.

From here on, every time this dashboard refreshes, the player itself — not Fugo's servers — opens the URL, signs in, and takes the screenshot. Your credentials are still stored encrypted in Fugo CMS, but the actual browsing session and the resulting image never leave your local network.

The fallback path: Public URL and the Dashboard Recorder

If your login involves an unusual multi-step flow that the Custom URL form can't get through on its own, or you need to erase specific elements from the screenshot or capture just one part of the page, use the Public URL card instead. This installs a Chrome extension — the Dashboard Recorder — that walks you through recording your login and capture steps manually, once, for Fugo to replay from then on. You'll be prompted to install the extension and allow it to run in Incognito mode; once that's done, you'll sign in to your dashboard as you normally would, then choose from three capture tools:

Capture Dashboard

Takes a screenshot of everything visible at your dashboard's URL — the simplest option if the whole page is what you want on screen.

Element Eraser

Lets you click and remove specific elements from view before the screenshot is taken — useful for hiding navigation bars, ads, or anything else cluttering the page.

Element Screenshot

Captures just one selected element — a single chart or table — rather than the whole page. If this doesn't isolate things cleanly for your particular dashboard, the Design Studio's cropping tool can achieve a similar result after the fact; see our Design Studio cropping guide.

If your login requires a 2FA code, you'll be prompted to enter your Secret Key at the relevant step in the recording. Once you're finished recording, follow the same steps above to switch this dashboard to Use player for running steps in its On-Premise tab.

Streaming: showing a live dashboard instead of a periodic screenshot

By default, any TV Dashboard — cloud, Local Player, or on-premise — is a still image that refreshes periodically (every few seconds up to daily, depending on your plan and settings). For a Local Player dashboard, you also have the option to turn on Streaming, which keeps a live browser session open on the player and streams it to the screen continuously, so tickers, animated charts, and live-updating numbers actually move on screen instead of only updating at each refresh.

Streaming is available once Use player for running steps is on, and it automatically restarts the underlying browser session every so often to keep memory use in check on the player — you won't notice this happening. Because it keeps a session continuously open rather than periodically re-visiting the page, Streaming is best suited to dashboards where the live-updating look is worth the extra resource use; for a dashboard that's fine refreshing every so often, the standard screenshot mode is lighter-weight and works just as well.

Advanced settings

Every dashboard — Local Player included — has an Advanced settings panel with a number of options worth knowing about, beyond the basics of URL and credentials:

Resolution

Choose a Horizontal (1920×1080) or Vertical (1080×1920) preset to match your screen's orientation, or set a fully Custom width and height. Getting this right avoids a dashboard that's captured at the wrong aspect ratio and looks stretched or cropped oddly on screen.

Pause

How many seconds Fugo waits after the page loads before taking the screenshot. Increase this if your dashboard is slow to load and you're seeing loading spinners in your captures.

Scroll

How far down the page (in pixels) Fugo scrolls before capturing. Useful for long dashboards where the important content sits below the fold.

Memory

Choose Low or High memory allocation for the browser session that renders your dashboard. Heavier, more complex dashboards may render more reliably with High memory selected.

Login URL

An optional override for cases where your dashboard's own URL doesn't redirect straight to the actual sign-in page — point this at the login page directly if Fugo isn't reaching it automatically.

Re-use cookies

Keeps the same browser session active between refreshes instead of signing in fresh every time. This can make refreshes faster and reduce how often your identity provider sees a "new" login, but it also means a session needs to be re-established (via a full sign-in) if it eventually expires or is revoked.

Force redirect

Tells Fugo to automatically follow redirects rather than waiting for a click — helpful for dashboards that bounce through an intermediate page on the way to the login form or the dashboard itself.

💡 On-premise and Local Player dashboards aren't subject to the same daily refresh cap that applies to cloud dashboards on some plans — depending on your plan, a Local Player dashboard can refresh as often as once a minute, since the images never have to travel further than your own network.

Once you're happy with how your dashboard looks, publish it directly to a screen or playlist, or open it in the Design Studio first to crop it, add your logo, or combine it with other content like a clock, weather, or ticker.
