Understanding the difference between webOS TV & webOS Signage

LG has two separate operating systems for commercial and consumer displays, respectively.

Commercial - webOS Signage

LG's product line made specifically for digital signage runs the operating system webOS Signage, which comes with features especially for digital signage. The hardware advantages of these displays include: higher brightness, longer operating hours and higher durability.

Fugo supports:

  • webOS Signage 4.0

  • webOS Signage 4.1

  • webOS Signage 6.0

Consumer - webOS TV

LG's line of consumer smart TVs run the webOS TV operating system. These displays are primarily designed for home entertainment, both in hardware and features, and therefore are generally built for playback sessions of 4-6 hours. They're not particularly fit for purpose as digital signage displays & will therefore have a few drawbacks.

☝️ How to tell which one you are buying. Manufacturer listings and resellers often say only "webOS" without saying whether it is the signage or the TV build, and Fugo needs the signage one. The reliable marker is SCAP, the name of LG's signage API: if the specification sheet mentions SCAP, it is a webOS Signage display. If it does not, assume it is webOS TV and plan on attaching an external media player.

Minimum requirements

  • webOS Signage 4.0, 4.1 or 6.0 firmware

    • webOS Signage 4.0 is supported but not recommended

    • webOS Signage 6.0 is the newest version we support and the one we recommend

⚠️ Planning live web content or dashboards on LG? webOS Signage 6.0 renders pages with a Chrome 87 browser engine, which dates from late 2020. The display is fully supported, but a web page or dashboard built with newer JavaScript or CSS features may not render correctly on it. If your rollout depends on a specific web app or dashboard, test it on an LG screen before committing.
