Understanding the difference between consumer & commercial screens

When planning a digital signage deployment, you may not have the budget for commercial screens. If you're looking to save on entry costs, you may turn to your local big box store or screen distributor to find better deals on consumer TVs.

While we typically advise that you spend the dosh on professional displays (more upfront costs can often mean less costs down the road) a consumer TV screen may fit your needs as long as your demands on your screens aren't too high, i.e.:

  • You're not planning to have your screens run more than 8 hours a day

  • You don't need portrait orientation

  • You don't need protective controls like lockout features, kiosk mode, or remote control

  • You're not putting your screens outdoors or in high-brightness environments

One of the most recognizable names in screen technology, Samsung is a natural starting place for deploying a digital signage project. They're ubiquitous, offer a diverse screen lineup, and have affordable options for those looking to do digital signage on a limited budget.

They offer both consumer & commercial lines of displays, each with their own respective operating systems, to fit different project needs:

Commercial displays: SSSP on Tizen

Commercial screens utilize Samsung's SSSP, which is built on top of Tizen OS & has additional software features specifically tailored for digital signage, such as remote management, content scheduling, and advanced display control.

If you own an SSSP powered display, there's no need to purchase a separate player as the inbuilt operating system is powerful enough to provide a smooth, stable experience.

Consumer displays: Tizen OS

Samsung's consumer screens typically run on the Tizen operating system, which is also the foundation for Samsung's Smart Signage Platform (SSSP) used in commercial screens.

If you own a consumer display, you may want to consider purchasing an external media player to attach to your screen & turn it "smart." This will save you from running Fugo in your screen's browser (a non-ideal experience according to some customers) and provide more stability & performance.

Minimum requirements

  • Commercial (SSSP): Tizen 4.0 with SSSP6 or newer, supported up to Tizen 8.0

  • Consumer: Tizen 4.0 and up. Tizen 9.0 and 10.0 both run Fugo

☝️ Commercial and consumer Samsung screens are different platforms. On commercial SSSP displays we support up to Tizen 8.0, which covers every current Samsung signage model including the Tizen 7.0 C series. Consumer Samsung televisions run a different build of Tizen, and 9.0 and 10.0 work there, but that does not extend the commercial ceiling. For new purchases we recommend a professional SSSP display, or attaching an external media player to a consumer screen.

Two further things worth knowing before you deploy:

  • Firmware 1090.7 is not supported and has caused playback and orientation problems. Update away from it.

  • Zero-touch enrolment requires Tizen 6.5 or newer.

Known Limitations

  • Most consumer grade Samsung displays will require you to pair & run Fugo from your screen's browser, which some users find is not an ideal experience. Attaching an external media player avoids this.

  • Firmware 1090.7 is not supported.

  • Zero-touch enrolment requires Tizen 6.5 or newer.
